Sheriff wins several endorsements

New Windsor – Orange County Sheriff Carl DuBois was given a boost in his campaign for re-election Tuesday when the Hudson Valley Building and Construction Trades Council announced their endorsement of him for a second term as the county’s top law enforcement official.

Council President Todd Diorio said they endorsed DuBois because he has consistently supported unions.

“He’s a very fair person. He’s been able to get good wages and benefits and he’s fought for his own people, and that means a lot for the building trades,” he said.

The Hudson Valley Building and Construction Trades Council represents 28 local labor unions in the region, and has roughly 20,000 members.

DuBois said he took over an embattled department and turned it around. “I was sent in to fix an agency that was just about ready to be flushed down the toilet,” he said. “We were not competitive with the other law enforcement agencies in Orange County. Now we are. We have competitive wages, we have competitive benefits, and we have 20 year retirement.”

DuBois also received endorsements from several police associations today, including the New York State Chiefs of Police Association, and the Orange County Chiefs of Police Association. Other law enforcement unions that have endorsed the sheriff are the New York State Troopers PBA, New York State Police Investigators Association, New York State Deputies Association, and New York State Supreme Court Officers Association.

DuBois faces a GOP primary election challenge next Tuesday from Thomas Carton, a retired NYPD sergeant.
