Before he was elected in 2002, Orange County Sheriff Carl DuBois had a career as a Middletown cop, where he learned the profession from a local legend: Charlie Dino, who wore that city's shield for a distinguished 32 years.
Dino also supervised the district attorney's anti-drug unit. A gregarious, glass-is-half-full kind of guy, he was skilled at defusing the interagency turf battles that can complicate operations like the insurance-fraud crackdown that was announced yesterday in Goshen.
"The first thing out of his mouth was, 'How can I help you?' " DuBois recalled yesterday, during a news conference announcing seven arrests that resulted from the combined efforts of the sheriff's office, the state police and the state Insurance Department.
"I can't fill his shoes," as a cop, DuBois said, "But I can try to follow in his footsteps."
